FAQ

Which regex flavor is this?

JavaScript / ECMAScript — the same engine your browser uses for RegExp, String.match, and String.replace. Patterns that pass here behave like they will in Node and front-end code. It is not PCRE, Python, or Go RE2.

Why do I need the g flag?

Without g, JavaScript returns only the first match (and replace updates only the first occurrence). Turn g on to find and replace every match — the usual choice when testing.

What do $1 and $<name> mean in Replace?

$1, $2, … insert numbered capture groups. $& is the whole match. $<name> inserts a named group like (?<name>…). This mirrors String.prototype.replace in JavaScript.

Is my text or pattern uploaded?

No. Matching and replace run entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.

Why did matching stop at thousands of hits?

Very broad patterns can produce huge result sets. The tool caps listed matches so the page stays responsive — tighten the pattern or sample text to inspect the rest.
